I just got back from an excursion with Mitch to the Mingo Wildlife Refuge in Southeast MO. This is a little photo album documenting what we saw...

The Mingo Swamp is one of my favorite places in the state of Missouri to visit. The reason: Lots of reptiles and amphibians. Sure, we have them here in Southwest MO, but since Mingo is where the Mississippi Lowlands begins, there are many different species there than the ones here, due to the different habitat.

People at work gave me some weird looks when I told them where I was spending my birthday ("I'm going to the swamp!")...but there is no place I'd rather go (that is, save maybe New Mexico, and our financial sitch just ain't allowing that at the moment).

Anyhow, enough yammering. I got photos to show off!

So, we took off from Springfield at around noon on Thursday, May the 18th. We arrived in the small town of Wappapello, where we had a room booked at the Miller's Motor Lodge (it's a nice, inexpensive place to stay that's fairly close to the refuge).

We were happy to learn that we'd received a kitchenette room, so we were off to buy some groceries so we could cook dinner that evening and the next morning. There are a lot of great places to eat in Wappapello, but buying our groceries and fixing our own meals would be a lot cheaper. Plus, we could sit around at the motel and have a few cold ones and not have to worry about driving.

After filling our bellies with Amy's Extra-Yummy Hamburger Stroganoff (TM), we hit the hay early so that we could get up in the morning and head to the swamp.
